Validation and security

Mark LAN Terminals are configured with a fixed IP address because the terminals are manufactured to environments in which fixed mounting is an essential requirement. Furthermore, the use of fixed IP addresses provides an extra dimension of security.

By assigning a fixed IP address and relate this address with the Mark LAN terminal ID number, the ProMark system may validate that the network packages containing clock-ins come from a physical, specified and security approved network unit.

By grouping the Mark terminals with fixed IP addresses in an internal WLAN, an extra security dimension is added, seeing that only units in this WLAN have access to the ProMark system. In such an environment it is thus not possible for an ordinary PC or another unit with LAN access to simulate clock-ins because the PC/unit cannot be identified by a valid terminal ID/IP address. This improves the general security in the overall system considerably.

By assigning DHCP (dynamic assignment of IP addresses), this security factor is overridden because the extra validation is not possible. It is thus not possible to validate which unit that sends what.

By default, the ProMark system is not configured to validate IP addresses and terminal ID number, since this feature is not of general interest among our customers.

By default, the ProMark system is only configured to save which terminal ID number and IP address that deliver which packages. This is done due to the logging of an appropriate audit trail in order to track each single transaction to a physical Mark terminal. During normal circumstances, the validation as described above can however be activated if required.
